The signing ceremony: what actually happens
Under section 9 of the Wills Act 1837, your Will is only valid if you follow these steps:
- Gather two adult witnesses. They must be over 18, of sound mind, and not beneficiaries (or married to beneficiaries).
- All three people in the same room. You sign the Will while both witnesses watch.
- Each witness signs. Both witnesses sign in your presence. Their full name and address goes on the Attestation page.
- Date it. Use today's date. No pre-dating, no future-dating.
- Store it safely. A fireproof box at home, or your solicitor, or the government's free Will storage service.
